Japanese Adjectival noun ｜ 「 な-adjective 」( na-adjective )
There are two types of adjectives in Japanese .One of them is 「い-adjective」, and the other one is called 「 な-adjective 」. In fact , There are only 「 Adjective 」and「 Adjectival noun 」 in Japanese. But for forigeners,「i-adj」 and 「 na-adjective 」 might be more convenient to understand.So 「 i-adjective 」 and 「 na-adjective 」
Ex：
い-adj：高 い木 （a tall tree）。
な-adj：綺麗 な部屋 （a clean room or a beautiful room）。
The difference between「な-adj」 and 「い-adj」
「な-adj」＋です／元気です（Ｏ），「い-adj」＋です／いいです（*Ｏ）。
「な-adj」＋だ／元気だ（Ｏ），「い-adj」／いいだ（Ｘ）
「な-adj」＋である／元気である（Ｏ），「い-adj」＋である／いいである（Ｘ）
*The terminal form of 「い-adjective」 is end to 「い」, just like 「高い」。But the terminal form of 「な-adjective」 must end to 「だ」 , like 「きれいだ」. The reason for 「い-adj」 connecting to「です」 is just one, which is for 「polite」. So that’s why it can’t connect 「だ」 or 「である」.
★ Notice：「大きな」(big)、「小さな」（small）、「おかしな」（strange） are usually be mistaken for an 「Adjectival noun」，But they are just a「Adnominal adjectives」，they are not have the conjugation of 「な-adj」。
The conjugations of 「な-adj」
Down below we use「静 か」(quiet) as a example.
◉ Root：静 か
◉ Terminal form：静 かだ：a big room
◉ adnominal form：静 かな＋Noun。Ex：静 かな場所 。→ quiet place
◉ adverb：静 かに＋verb。Ex：静 かになった。→ become quiet
◉ Terminal form：「Polite」：root＋です。Ex：静 かです→quiet。
◉ volitional form「standard」：root＋「だろう」。静 かだろう。
◉ volitional form「Polite」：root＋「でしょう」。静 かでしょう。
◉ Past form「standard」：root＋「だった」。Ex：静 かだった。
◉ Past form「Polite」：root＋「でした」。Ex：静 かでした。
◉ Negative form「standard」：root＋「ではない」。Ex：静 かではない。
◉ Negative form「Polite」：root＋「ではありません」。Ex：静 かではありません。
◉ Past negative form「standard」：root＋「ではなかった」。Ex：静 かではなかった。
◉ Past negative form「Polite」：root＋「ではありませんでした」。Ex：静 かではありませんでした。
◉ Conditional form：root＋「なら(ば)」or「であれば」。Ex：静 かならば。静 かであれば
◉ Conditional nagative form：root＋「でなければ」。Ex：静 かでなければ
