Japanese Adjective ｜ 「 い-adjective 」( i-adjective )

Today,we will talking about 「 Japanese Adjective ｜ 「 い-adjective 」( i-adjective ) 」。There are two types of adjectives in Japanese.One of them is 「い（i）-adj」, and the other one is called 「な（na）-adj」. The 「な-adj」 is also called 「 Adjectival noun 」. We will explain it at the 「な-adj」 page.And now we are going to talk about 「 い-adj 」.

We can distinguish between 「い-adj」 and 「な-adj」 by the suffixes. If the suffix is「い」，that’s「い-adj」、if is’s「な」,that’s「な-adj」。

Ex：

い-adj：高（たか）い木（き）（a tall tree）。
な-adj：綺麗（きれい）な部屋（へや）（a clean room or a beautiful room）。

The conjugations of 「い-adj」

◉ 「い-adj」Terminal form：root + 「い」。Ex：root=大き。the terminal form is 「大きい」
◉ 「い-adj」＋Noun：大きい部屋：a big room
◉ turns a 「い-adj」 to an adv：root+「く」。Ex：子供が大きくなった→The kid turned big
◉ turns a 「い-adj」to a Noun：root+「さ」。Ex：大きい→大きさ＝size
◉ 「い-adj」Terminal form「standard」：大きい：big
◉ 「い-adj」Terminal form「polite」：Terminal form＋です。Ex：部屋が大きいです→the room is big。（★Note：「い-adj」cannot connect to a「だ」or「である」）
◉ 「い-adj」volitional form「standard」：Terminal form＋「だろう」。大きいだろう。
◉ 「い-adj」volitional form「polite」：Terminal form＋「でしょう」。大きいでしょう。
◉ 「い-adj」volitional form「かろう」：root+「かろう」。Ex：大きい→大きかろう。
◉ 「い-adj」Past from「standard」：「い」→「かった」。Ex：おいしい→おいしかった。
◉ 「い-adj」Past form 「polite」：root+「かったです」。Ex：大きい→大きかったです。(X)「おいしいでした。」
◉ 「い-adj」Negative form 「standard」：root+「くない」。Ex：大きい→大きくない。
◉ 「い-adj」Negative form 「polite」：root+「くありません」。Ex：大きい→大きくありません。
◉ 「い-adj」Past negative form「standard」：root+「くなかった」。Ex：大きい→大きくなかった。
◉ 「い-adj」Past negative form「polite」：root+「くありませんでした」。Ex：大きい→大きくありませんでした。
◉ 「い-adj」Conditional form：root+「ければ」。Ex：大きい→大きければ。
◉ 「い-adj」Negative conditional form：root+「くなければ」。Ex：大きい→大きくなければ。

★Note：”Terminal form” can basically be used alone.For Example：部屋（へや）が大（おお）きい。But such a statement does not feel so “polite”。The situation of verbs can use「ます（masu）」，and Nouns can use「です（desu）」to show politeness。So we use「です」 to show politeness.

There are three patterns to discribe the colors in Japanese as down below
①「ＯＯいＸＸ」：青（あお）い空（そら）:blue sky
②「ＯＯ色（いろ）いＸＸ」：黄色（きいろ）い花（はな）:yellow flowers
③「ＯＯ色のＸＸ」：緑色（みどりいろ）の木（き）:green trees
