お／ご～です

「This is..(Honorific)」

If some nouns in Japanese are to be spoken noble, they usually add “お” or “ご” in front of them. Such as “お箸”, “ご飯” and so on.

There are also some verbs that can be nominalized. When the first and second types of verbs need to be nominalized, just remove “ます”　from the “ます type” of the verb. The stem of the third type of verb is a noun.

Sentence Patterns

Example Sentences

Normal form	お〜です form	Meaning
１、これはかれの一生の頼みです。	これは彼の一生のお頼みです。	This is the biggest favor he’ll ask.

２、東京（とうきょう）から来（き）たんですか？	東京（とうきょう）からのお越（こ）しですか？	Are you from Tokyo?

３、この案件（あんけん）は木村（きむら）さんが依頼（いらい）したのです。	この案件（あんけん）は木村（きむら）さんのご依頼（いらい）です。	This case was commissioned by Mr. Kimura

４、久（ひさ）しぶりです。元気（げんき）ですか？	お久（ひさ）しぶりです。お元気（げんき）ですか？	It has been a long time, how are you?

５、これはあの人の質問（しつもん）です。	これはあの人のご質問（しつもん）です。	This is the question that the person asked.

６、これは古（ふる）くから伝（つた）わってきた遊（あそ）びです。	これは古（ふる）くから伝（つた）わってきたお遊（あそ）びです。	This is a game handed down in ancient times.

７、こんな時間（じかん）にもう帰（かえ）るんですか？	こんな時間（じかん）にもうお帰（かえ）りですか？	Are you going back now?
