「as soon as~」

Meaning

◉ as soon as~

◉ It means that something has just been done and the opposite of what has just happened happened.

◉ The latter sentence usually follows a negative result.

◉ This sentence pattern is used for actions that “frequently repeat”, so it’s not necessary for things that only happen once.

Wrong example：

◉ 新（あたら）しいお皿（さら）を買（か）ったそばから割（わ）ってしまった。

（I just bought a new plate and it broke immediately.）

Example Sentences

① 「忘（わす）れないで」と言（い）ったそばから、すぐ忘（わす）れてしまった。

Wasurenaide, to itta soba kara, sugu wasurete shimatta.

I just said “Don’t forget” and I immediately forgot.

② 私（わたし）が片付（かたづ）けてるそばから、うちの子（こ）はすぐ散（ち）らかす。

Watashi ga katadzuke teru soba kara, uchinoko wa sugu chirakasu.

I was just cleaning, and my child immediately messed up.

③ 夕食（ゆうしょく）を食（た）べたそばから、お腹（なか）が減（へ）ってしまった。

Yūshoku o tabeta soba kara, onaka ga hette shimatta.

I have just eaten dinner, but I was hungry immediately。

④ パソコンを直（なお）したそばから、また壊（こわ）れた。

Pasokon o naoshita soba kara, mata kowareta.

The computer just got repaired and it broke immediately.

⑤ 雪（ゆき）かきをしたそばからすぐ積（つ）もる。

Yukikaki o shita soba kara sugu tsumoru.

As soon as the snow is cleared, snow has accumulated.

⑥ 車（くるま）を洗（あら）ったそばから、雨（あめ）が降（ふ）り始（はじ）め、また汚（よご）れてしまった。

Kuruma o aratta soba kara, ame ga ori hajime, mata yogorete shimatta.

As soon as I had just washed my car, it started to rain, and my car became dirty again.
