ておる・ております Keigo

Today, I would like to talk about N3 grammar, “〜teoru・teorimasu (ておる・ております)”.

THE MEANING OF “〜ておる・〜ております”

The grammar of “〜ておる・〜ております” is a humble word among honorifics. It’s pretty simple to use、In conclusion, it is almost the same as the usage of「〜ている・ています」、I think it’s easier to remember if you think「おる=いる」、The only thing I would like you to pay attention to is that “おる” is a humble word,It just cannot be used on other people or people of higher age and status.

The meaning of humble language is to express our actions in a more modest way. It will be used in the following situations.

  • ① When talking to people outside our own company, the actions of people inside our company will use “humble language”. Even if this person is the president of the company, you must use “modest language” to express himself.
  • ② Used on children or animals, inanimate objects.Ex:「子供達は公園で遊んでおります。」「猫は木の上で寝ております。」。
  • ③ When explaining something from the perspective of an objective third party.Ex:「街に人々が集まっております。」

Occasionally we may hear some dialects similar to Kansai accent.or the ancient usage.Ex:「今どこにおる?」or「何をしておるのじゃ!」
